Identifying Storm
Damage
Hail and wind damage is identifiable as any damage
that your property has sustained as a result of hail
(usually 1” or larger) striking your home in
moderate to heavy volume. High winds can also
severely increase the amount of physical damage to
your home and business. Typically, this type of hail
will damage and compromise the integrity of asphalt
composite shingles, cedar shake, metal roofing, tile
roofing, foam and flat roofs as well as siding,
window screens and AC fins. If enough damage has
been sustained to your property, your insurance
company may be liable for the damages to your
property.
Storm damaged Roofing
Hail damage is caused when hail stones dislodge the
granules from the surface of the shingles creating a
“bruise” which exposes the asphalt underneath. The
colored granules are adhered to the surface of the
shingles in order to protect the asphalt from sun
exposure, and when that protection fails, the
integrity of the shingle is compromised. Over time,
this damage could develop into serious problems.
Even new shingles that barely show the damage can be
considered ruined. A shingle designed to last 30
years can be compromised immediately, or even up to
5 years after the storm if legitimate damage is
overlooked. Many times the hail will loosen the bond
between the granules and the asphalt and as the
compromised areas are exposed to wind, rain and sun
they will begin to fall off and leave the asphalt
vulnerable to UV exposure and deterioration. In
order to properly detect shingle damage that may be
hard to spot, we look for “collateral” damage such
as indentations on the soft metal accessories of the
roof, or along gutters, screens and siding.
Storm-damaged Siding
High winds and hail can leave dents, holes or even
tear off pieces of siding. Of course, when whole
pieces of siding are missing from your house it is
easy to see that damage has occurred. However, some
siding damage can go undetected to the untrained
eye. Undetected siding damage can lead to interior
damage and even damage to the spaces between the
siding and the interior if water is allowed to enter
behind the siding. Some signs of problems caused by
siding damage include appearance of mold, separating
seams, warping boards that do not lay flat against
the house, swelling, delaminating (including peeling
and chipping) and even moisture on the inside of the
house.
